Biologically Effective Dose (BED) & Equivalent Dose (EQD2) Calculator

Compare radiotherapy fractionation schedules by calculating biologically effective dose (BED) and equivalent dose (EQD2) using the linear–quadratic model. Coming soon.

The BED and EQD2 Calculator is being developed to support biological comparison of radiotherapy fractionation schedules. Using total dose, number of fractions and a selected tissue-specific alpha/beta ratio, the calculator will estimate the biologically effective dose and the corresponding equivalent dose delivered in 2 Gy fractions.

The tool will assist medical physicists, radiation oncologists, researchers and trainees in comparing conventional fractionation, hypofractionation and selected stereotactic treatment schedules. Separate alpha/beta ratios can be used to assess anticipated effects on tumour control and late-responding normal tissues. Calculations are based on the standard linear–quadratic model:

BED = nd × [1 + d/(α/β)]

EQD2 = BED ÷ [1 + 2/(α/β)]

where n is the number of fractions, d is the dose per fraction and α/β is the selected tissue-specific ratio.

The results are intended for education, research, preliminary comparison and independent checking. Clinical interpretation requires professional judgement, particularly for very high doses per fraction, treatment interruptions, re-irradiation and situations where the standard linear–quadratic model may have limitations.
